Negros Island Region Joins Palarong Pambansa For The First Time, Making A New Era Of Unity

AGUSAN DEL SUR — The 2026 Palarong Pambansa has become even more historic with the official debut of the Negros Island Region (NIR) in the country’s biggest national sporting event for student-athletes. For the first time ever, athletes from Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, and Siquijor are competing together under one regional banner, symbolizing not only athletic excellence but also the long-awaited realization of regional unity.

The participation of NIR in this year’s games is considered a milestone for the newly re-established region. Young athletes, coaches, trainers, and officials from across the island group have gathered to proudly represent their communities on the national stage in Agusan del Sur.

A Long Journey Toward Regional Unity

The idea of unifying Negros as one administrative region has existed for generations. Historically, Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental once functioned as a single province during the Spanish colonial period. Over time, however, the two provinces became separated into different administrative regions — Negros Occidental under Western Visayas and Negros Oriental under Central Visayas.

For many residents and leaders, this separation created difficulties in governance, coordination, infrastructure planning, and public service delivery despite both provinces sharing strong cultural, economic, and historical ties.

In 2015, former President Benigno Aquino III signed Executive Order No. 183, officially creating the original Negros Island Region. The region included Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, and Bacolod City. However, the arrangement was short-lived after the region was dissolved in 2017 through Executive Order No. 38 under the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte.

Despite the setback, calls for the restoration of the region continued for years. Those efforts finally paid off on June 11, 2024, when President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signed Republic Act No. 12000, also known as the Negros Island Region Act. The law officially revived NIR and expanded it to include Siquijor, recognizing the province’s historical and economic connection to Negros Oriental.

The re-establishment of the region aims to improve government efficiency, strengthen local autonomy, and accelerate development across the island group. Today, the region serves millions of residents from Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, and Siquijor under one administrative framework.

NIR Steps Into the National Sports Spotlight

This year’s Palarong Pambansa serves as the first national sporting event where the Negros Island Region competes as one unified delegation. Carrying the banner of the “Visayan Vipers,” the athletes are participating in multiple sporting disciplines such as athletics, swimming, basketball, volleyball, football, badminton, arnis, and many others.

Hundreds of student-athletes earned their places in the delegation after months of training, qualifiers, and preparation. Beyond personal achievement, each athlete now carries the pride of representing the newly revived region.

Regional leaders expressed excitement and optimism over the historic participation.

“This is a proud moment for the entire Negros Island Region. For the first time, we stand together in the Palarong Pambansa as one delegation. This reflects years of hard work in developing our sports programs and supporting young athletes,” Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson shared.

Officials from Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, and Siquijor have also pledged continued support for the athletes, emphasizing that the experience itself is already a victory for the region. Beyond medals and rankings, the games provide valuable exposure, discipline, camaraderie, and inspiration for the youth.

More Than Just a Competition

The debut of NIR in the Palarong Pambansa goes beyond sports. It symbolizes the growing identity and unity of the region after decades of separation and political transitions.

For many Negrenses and Siquijodnons, seeing athletes compete together under one regional flag represents progress, cooperation, and shared pride. It also inspires younger generations to pursue excellence not only in sports but in every field where discipline, hard work, and determination matter.

As the delegation competes in Agusan del Sur, communities across the Negros Island Region continue to rally behind their athletes, hopeful that this historic first appearance will become the beginning of many successful chapters ahead.
